WHAT LOVE GOT TO DO WITH IT by Irina Rubina
Joyful carousel to homage Miles Davis, the master of trumpet.
The comic album composed of fragments about the camp in the Sinai Desert where a large number of our people who were fleeing Nazi reprisal found salvation contains a perfect balance between enough empathy, actuality, as well as the craft confidence of a proven author like Helena Klakočar. In the world of migration in which we live, a comic album like this can be an honor and pride of the comic scene, not only in Croatia and the region, but also much wider.
The monograph that contains Dušan Gačić’s oeuvre is a testimony of his love for comics and an artifact of the faith and doubts of a comic artist who, it is clear while holding this thick book in his hands, has never given up on comics, nor will he give up. Also, it is a monograph that in itself is an award for comics as a medium and for the domestic scene, and which, in the opinion of the jury, without any hesitation deserves the “Vladimir Nazor” lifetime achievement award.
From the design and type of paper to the clear editorial policy, “Walking School” with its sublist deserves wider public attention. The context in which it was created, where it affirms comics at an important point of official culture such as ALU in Zagreb, is what comics as a medium desperately needs. The sub-sheet “Long-distance walkers” which gathered the works of established artists is something that the jury has not seen in such a perfect performance for a long time and is the crown of a project to which we wish from the bottom of our hearts many more successful walks.
“Travelogues” stood out with a coherent performance and a well-rounded story, as well as an approach where the production of the fanzine itself – in the vivid technique of RISO printing – is an important and inseparable part of the reading experience. Apolonija Lučić managed to create a fanzine that thus becomes more than a fanzine, and “Travelogues” are a real statement by the author, which we believe should be wholeheartedly supported.
